Fishy Christmas Greeting

Fish Christmas Greeting
1/4 sheet watercolor & gesso

The thought behind this painting is that I was born in March and a Pisces (fish) on the astrology charts.  It is rather hard to tell but that is a hook in the fishes mouth carrying the Christmas globe.  Maybe I should paint lights on one of the trees?  Anyway, it was fun painting it.

The reference photo for the fish is from the Wet Canvas Image Library.  Thanks for looking.

Saturday Update

I went to youtube and watched Ross Barbera paint a magnolia and did my best to follow along.  This photo is of a small portion of the painting as I wasn't sure if I should show it.

A member of paintingfriends.com shared some of her "cow" photos so decided to try sketching a cow again.  Thanks, Judy!

Wedding Gift Portrait

 Ian & Kayly
Acrylic
16" x 20" Gallery Wrap

My twin wanted a wedding gift painted of her granddaughter and fiance.  She and Robert delivered it to Kayly and Ian in California, yesterday. The photos look a bit blurred don't they.  I almost forgot to take photos and had to hurry as she was carrying the painting out the door.

Nieces Portrait, Wednesday Update

A little more progress, especially on Bet and Emma, the two on the viewer's right.  I'm not exactly happy with the way the skin tones look. I will have to work on giving the skin more values (color) without such drastic transitions from shadow to light, especially on Kayly (the girl in the dark blue).  There is still more work to do on each feature, clarifying, modifying, etc.  I just love to paint!

Nieces Portrait, Update

More areas worked on.  Had to get out the magnifying glass to work on the eyes.  I paint for a bit, take a break, paint a bit more, take a break.  The whole point of painting for me is to enjoy the process along the way.  It may not be perfect but always, challenging and interesting.

Nieces Portrait, Kayly Update

I've begun blocking in shapes and trying to get tones and shades.  I had to enlarge her face just a bit to be in proportion with the other girls.

Niece's Portrait, Abbie Update

This is much closer to looking like Abbie but still isn't on the mark yet.  As I begin painting the other girls, I will continue to work on Abbie.  Her hair needs more depth and volume and the widith of her smile may be a bit too narrow while her face looks a bit more round than it actually is.

The next niece in line in the reference photo is Kayly and she is looking pretty ragged.  Yesterday's application of paint makes her look scary, like she is suffering from too much sun.  Don't you just love all that blue in the neck area.  I'll be working the skin tones more today, bringing them in line to look more natural.

Nieces Portrait Update

This is a crop showing the work I've been doing on Abbie's portion of the family portrait.  She looks a bit "cloudy" and her skin tones still have to be worked on but it is beginning to look like her.  The main thing is to work out the skin tones and the values so the painting works better.  The photo below shows how the painting looked when I stopped working on it.

checking in

Just to let you know I really am around but haven't been painting.  My brother passed away August 3rd and have taken time to be with family and friends.  I will be back and in the meantime, hope all of you are happily painting.

Practicing Oils

I am trying to teach myself to oil paint even though I have had some lessons a few years ago.  The most difficult part has been laying down a stroke and leaving it alone.  I am one of those that mush and brush until everything is blended and/or muddy.   For this study, I am using a photo of my niece.  Time will tell how close a resemblance I achieve.

#17 Apples Updated

Made some changes to the apples - some changes I like such as the warmer tones but lost the look of the apple on the viewer's left which I liked in the earlier version.

#15 Apples

#15 Apples
6" x 6" Gessoed Ampersand Board
Oil over a previous painting
Blocking in shapes and mass, placing values - much more to do.  I am thoroughly enjoying myself.  I am going to have to replace the Ultramarine Blue Deep I have as it is old and very stiff as it comes out of the tube.  One of the goals I have is to paint without medium so buttery paint would be an asset.

Just Paint #12, 13, 14 Roses Continued

6" x 6" Oil on Gessoed Ampersand Board.

#14 continued painting and am calling this one done.

#13.  I'm still working on getting better values in the reds.  I've been having fun though slathering on the red paint.

#12 the form beginning to take shape.

#3 Just Paint

#3 in the 30 day Just Paint Challenge.  This is a quick 2" x 6" watercolor sketch from a photo but instead of foreground grasses I chose to paint water reflections.

In the previous post I called it a Paint Along so needed to correct that to Just Paint.

Tomato Studies

paintingfriends.com is hosting a 30 day Paint Along in June.  We pick our own subjects and do a painting a day for 30 days.  Thanks to Wyna for the idea.  To start, I decided to do some studies of tomatoes using the same photo.  The goals for these studies are achieve better values with reds and practice shadows.  Other goals were to practice painting stems and controlling the paint/water ratio to get cleaner lines and look to the work.

My camera is turning the reds to a more orange red when in actuality there is a mix of blue reds in shadows with the more orange reds in the light.

Flower Study

The goal for this study was to have lost and found edges with loose looking brushwork and leaving whites.  I wanted at least three values with strong darks to bring out the feeling of light.

Nose Sketches

Finally, reaching a point where I can do more than just sleep, hooray.  Healing well and taking an interest in working with art again.  To all of you that offered caring comments, thank you so much.

The last three sketches were done with a Prismacolor watersoluble 9B graphite pencil.  I didn't use any water though, just straight sketching.  The reference photos from Morgue File were posted  in the "Noses" thread in the Portrait forum at paintingfriends.com.   I find noses hard to sketch and paint so the more practice I do the more I learn and one day may not find drawing and painting noses so difficult.

Another thing that has been occupying my mind is that I always paint in a "how do I" mode rather than a creative mode.  In other words, I am so occupied with how to paint or draw something rather than being creative.  Perhaps I am afraid to be creative so I stick with the "safe" aspects of learning, trying for perfection, knowing perfection will never be reached.   But learning must embody creativeness, yes?? So must learn that too!

I'm Back, Finally

My apologies for disappearing so suddenly but on 2-28 I had gall bladder surgery which went very well but other complications arose.  I was finally released from hospital 3-15 and am I tickled to be home.  The doctors and nursing staff at WW Hastings were terrific .  I'm weak but willing to do as much as I can without over doing it.

My twin still hasn't seen her birthday painting, even in the unfinished state. So as soon as I can hold a brush longer than five seconds, I'll be painting.  She came to the hospital on our birthday and brought a turkey and a rooster hat sent to us by her daughter in Calif, just so we could have some fun.  Don't you know we looked the height of fashion. :giggle: :giggle:

In the meantime, think color, add zest to whatever you do and hug all the ones you care about just because it feels good to do so.

Friday's Quick Sketches

These first two sketches are 30 seconds drawn with the left hand which was suggested by another artist friend, Stephie.

This last little sketch is drawn with the right hand in five minutes.  I didn't get very far as I was trying for more accuracy.

Abbie, Sketches & Quick Gestures Sketches

A quick sketch this morning focusing on the shape of Abbie's nose.   More practice needed as I am going too heavy, too dark, too detailed, too quickly.

Sketches of Abbie drawn on 01-21-13 showing different positions and different settings.

More 30 and 60 second gesture sketches done this morning.  Most of these are drawn without taking my eye off the photo, except for quick glances, so these could be called contour as well as gesture sketches.
