More figures were added plus a couple of signs. The top deck is not quite that dark and there is more variation of color than is showing. I will look at this again tomorrow to see if I can fix a couple of the faces to show up a bit more plus a few more lights on the plants.

The Dead Layer is being applied using mixes of Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue and gesso in different gray values. As you can see the Burnt Umber/Burnt Sienna Layer is still showing through. There is much more work to do before this layer is finished.

I think I am done with the Umber Layer. Next I will start refining using opaque highlights and the Dead Layer. The Dead Layer is all grays and will be a completed painting except for adding the color layers. My goal is to have some of the warmth of the Umber Layer shine through the Dead Layer.

The first photo is the charcoal sketch using a grid to draw it on the canvas. The second photo is the Imprimatura Layer which basically established a mid-tone layer. For this layer, Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna was used. The third photo is the Umber Layer, establishing the darks and reestablishing the elements in the painting. As you can see, I have only worked on the roofs. The canvas is 12" x 12" gallery wrapped.

I received this terrific new book, "Putting People In Your Paintings." It says to look for abstract shapes, lights and darks. This sketch is the first step. The second step is to use tracing paper and shade the shadow areas. The third step is to use tracing paper and shade in the lights. This trains the eye to see values, shapes, contrasts.
